BALI IN THE 1930's - Photographs and
Sculptures
by Arthur Fleischman
Price: US$99.00
This is a luxurious book published by a very
fine specialist art publisher, Pictures Publisher. The text is by Paul de
Bont and is based on the original manuscript written by Arthur Fleischmann
during his stay in Sydney, Australia between 1939 and 1948. Arthur
Fleischmann was born in 1896 in Bratislava where he studied to be a medical
doctor. He also studied sculpture in Vienna and in 1937 left Europe for
South Africa, then Zanzibar and on to Indonesia. "I came to Bali as a
sculptor, and the Balinese have been a tremendous inspiration in my work.
But sculpting is slow.... such that it can give only a few crystallised
symbols of life. Photographs can capture the beauty of the human figure,
especially the beauty of Balinese women".

SUTASOMA: The ancient tale of a Buddha-Prince
from a 14th century Javanese kakawin
Translated with commentary by Kate O'Brien
Price: US$ 45.00
The 14th century epic poem, Sutasoma, relates
the life of a prince, born an incarnation of the Jina-Buddha Wairocana. It
follows his spiritual journey to enlightenment, and his temporal journey
through marriage, kingship and eventual victory over the mighty,
world-threatening demon, Poruda. Kate O'Brien's new translation delivers to
the reader a highly approachable and lively rendition of this Buddhist epic,
comparable in both complexity and scale to that of the Ramayana, yet
significantly less known or understood. This entertaining and attractively
illustrated edition will appeal to readers with interest in the literary
traditions of southeast Asia and of tantric Buddhism, and also to a wider
audience who wish to understand the foundations, both mystical and
practical, underpinning much of Javanese and Balinese society today.

THE ROMANCE OF K'TUT TANTRI
by Timothy Lindsey
Price: US$29.95
This historiographic study of K'tut Tantri
compares her romantic and colorful autobiography, Revolt in Paradise, with
other versions of her past, including those of her fellow Bali colonists and
her revolutionary comrades, as well as her foes the Dutch, and various
intelligence organisations. These alternatives accounts of her past question
the image of K'tut Tantri as hero, portraying her instead as dishonest,
unstable, egotistical and immoral. An examinations of the use of ideas of
"truth" and "fiction" in understanding the past leads to broader
consideration of the nature of history and its uses.

Mads Lange was a native Dane who at the age of 17 landed on the shores of
Lombok in 1834. He forged an alliance with the then Balinese King of

businessman and maintained good relationships with a wide range of social

SACRED PAINTING IN BALI: Tradition in
Transition
by Thomas L. Cooper
Price: US$45.00
Sacred Painting in Bali is a vibrant form of
folk art. Unlike Balinese commercial art, sacred paintings, once they are
dedicated in a temple are believed to possess spiritual power. They are not
preserved as 'works of art', but are regarded as craft products made for a
specific purpose and expected to wear out in time. Sacred Paintings are
'traditional' paintings in Bali and are derived from traditional narrative,
legends, fables and the Hindu epics of Mahabhrata and Ramayana. They convey
a vision of niskala, the unseen world and are functionally religious. Sacred
Painting is well researched and contains ninety-six full coloured pictures
of painters and their works taken by the author himself.

THEO MEIER : A SWISS ARTIST UNDER THE TROPICS
by Didier Hamel
Price: US$100 (limited edition)
Theo Meier was born in Bubendorf/Basel-Champagne
in 1908 and from a very early age had made up his mind that he wanted to be
an artist. He enrolled at the Basel School for Arts and Craft and worked his
way through a scholarship and short studies in Berlin and Dresden. He
dreamed of going "East" to the "Tropics" like Gauguin and others before him.
He set off to find his inspiration in the south seas and arrived in Papeete,
Tahiti, then on to Bora-Bora. After a short tour of the New Hebrides, New
Caledonia and Australia he went on to Hong Kong, China and Singapore and
then finally to Bali where he stayed for 20 years. He loved painting the
Balinese women and the picturesque landscapes surrounding him. He went on to
settle in Thailand where he also spent 25 years painting. Theo Meier died in
Basel in 1982 and his ashes were scattered over the two inspirational places
that so dominated his life, Bali and Thailand. This book is both
enlightening and entertaining. It so aptly describes the fascination for the
east of that time, interspersed with political, cultural and social events
that shaped this artist's life.

AROK OF JAVA
by Pramoedya Ananta Toer
Translated by Max Lane
Price: US$25.00
"It is the 13th century in Java. Rebelliousness
stirs among peasant farmers and Brahmin priests alike. Slavery has returned
and men, women and children labour to find gold for Java's rulers. Bearing
the symbols of spiritual power, a young scholar-bandit and rebel appears,
called Arok - he who upturns everything. As the rebellion spreads, it is
Arok himself whom the rulers employ to suppress it. Thus emerges one of the
epic political conspiracies of Javanese history. At stake is power in Java
itself, the Lady Consort Dedes, and an end to slavery and oppression. This
novel presents Pramoedya's version of a great legend emerging out of the
mists of historical past, is a tale of palace politics, conspiracy and
revolution. It sets out the beginning of historical process that began on
Java and gives the most vivid picture of the political, cultural and social
forces which Pramoedya sees as having remained crucial until even today: the
castes of the Brahman intellectuals, the Satria military and the Sudra, the
people, the farmers, the artisans and labourers." The author Pramoedya
Ananta Toer (1925-2006) is regarded as Indonesia's greatest novelist.
