THE ROMANCE OF K'TUT TANTRI
by Timothy Lindsey
Price: US$29.95
This historiographic study of K'tut Tantri
compares her romantic and colorful autobiography, Revolt in Paradise, with
other versions of her past, including those of her fellow Bali colonists and

the image of K'tut Tantri as hero, portraying her instead as dishonest,
unstable, egotistical and immoral. An examinations of the use of ideas of
"truth" and "fiction" in understanding the past leads to broader
consideration of the nature of history and its uses. |

CONTEMPORARY MARITIME PIRACY IN SOUTHEAST
ASIA: History, Causes and Remedies
by Adam J. Young
Price: US$30.00
This book explores contemporary maritime piracy
in Southeast Asia by exploring the depth and breadth of historical piracy as
a causative factor. The threat to life and property posed by piracy is
relatively low, but significant given the strategic nature of these
waterways that link the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Piracy is emblematic of
broader issues of weak state control in the region. Maritime piracy will
never be completely eliminated, but with a progressive economic and
political agenda aimed at changing the environment from which piracy is
emerging, it could once again become the exception rather than the rule. |

THE IMAGE OF THE OTHER AS ENEMY
Radical Discource in Indonesia
by Muhammad Iqbal Ahnaf
Price: US$12.00
"The book analyzes the systematic construction
of the image of the Other, that is, non-Muslims, by two radical Islamic
groups, Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI).
The author documents discourse patterns in the groups' publications and
speeches stereotyping non-Muslims as hostile towards Islam and imagining
Islam's imminent victory after an inevitable clash with all other
civilizations. Although these groups do not engage in physical violence, the
author categorizes their efforts to stereotype non-Muslims as 'symbolic
violence'. Moreover, in the long run, their activities my be
counterproductive because of the religious and ethnic pluralism of
Indonesian society". Muhammad Iqbal Ahnaf is a lecturer and researcher at
the Center for Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies at Gadjah Mada
University and at Darul Ulum Islamic University, Lamongan, Indonesia. |

JOURNEYS OF DESIRE
A Study of the Balinese text Malat
by Adrian Vickers
Price: US$49.00
From the late seventeenth
century until the Dutch conquest of the early twentieth century Bali was
ruled by a set of competing kingdoms. This study of the Balinese text Kidung
Malat is the first work in Indonesian historical studies to analyse the main
ideology of these Balinese kingdoms. It does so by demonstrating how the
performance and presentation of the text presented an image of the ideal
prince to both rulers and subjects.
The Kidung Malat exemplifies
courtly ideology through its descriptions of the adventures of kinds and
princes from the era of the medieval kingdoms of East Java. It is one of the
longest and most complex of a set of narratives called Panji stories, which
originated in East Java and spread throughout Southeast Asia. This book is
also the first extensive historical analysis of the Panji story, combining
textual analysis with the study of the gambuh dance-drama in which the Malat
is performed, and comparing these forms with paintings and other
manifestations of the text. |

With the changing economic scene, the changing political scene and the arrival of European visitors in the 1920's and 1930's who soon relayed to all the beauty and charm of this idyllic island, all of
which made a huge impact on the "real" and "unspoiled" Bali. A fascinating look at this transitional period in Balinese history.

ORDEAL BY FIRE
by Gde Aryantha Soethama
Translated by Vern Cork
Price: US$10.00
Gde Aryantha Soethama is one of Bali's most
respected writers. He won the prestigious Khatulistiwa prize for Indonesian
Literature in 2006. "There have been too many stories about Bali written by
non-Balinese that superficially represent the island and its people.
The bitterness and irony of (the Balinese) people are not captured and not
genuinely explored by those who are not native. Bali is replete with
paradox. It is always complicated, tangled, but from the outside seems
loose, open and genial". (Gd Aryantha Soethama) And so this collection of
stories explores the tangled, paradoxical nature of the Balinese people. It
is also an exploration of conflict in today's Balinese society between
traditional and modern values. The colourful and vibrant narrative is
enhanced by a very sensitive and true translation by Vern Cork. |

AROK OF JAVA
by Pramoedya Ananta Toer
Translated by Max Lane
Price: US$25.00
"It is the 13th century in Java. Rebelliousness
stirs among peasant farmers and Brahmin priests alike. Slavery has returned
and men, women and children labour to find gold for Java's rulers. Bearing
the symbols of spiritual power, a young scholar-bandit and rebel appears,
called Arok - he who upturns everything. As the rebellion spreads, it is
Arok himself whom the rulers employ to suppress it. Thus emerges one of the
epic political conspiracies of Javanese history. At stake is power in Java
itself, the Lady Consort Dedes, and an end to slavery and oppression. This
novel presents Pramoedya's version of a great legend emerging out of the
mists of historical past, is a tale of palace politics, conspiracy and
revolution. It sets out the beginning of historical process that began on
Java and gives the most vivid picture of the political, cultural and social
forces which Pramoedya sees as having remained crucial until even today: the
castes of the Brahman intellectuals, the Satria military and the Sudra, the
people, the farmers, the artisans and labourers." The author Pramoedya
Ananta Toer (1925-2006) is regarded as Indonesia's greatest novelist. |

never to abandon our neighbours and encourages us to keep our hearts and
minds open. The story itself centres on the journey of "Marilyn" from her
complicated life in Australia to the lush green splendour of Ubud Bali. Set
between the bombings of 2002 and 2005 we follow her quest for her "paradise"
and for the meaning of "passion" in a post 9/11 world. |

through marriage, kingship and eventual victory over the mighty,
world-threatening demon, Poruda. Kate O'Brien's new translation delivers to

significantly less known or understood. This entertaining and attractively
illustrated edition will appeal to readers with interest in the literary
traditions of southeast Asia and of tantric Buddhism, and also to a wider
audience who wish to understand the foundations, both mystical and
practical, underpinning much of Javanese and Balinese society today. |

SACRED PAINTING IN BALI: Tradition in
Transition
by Thomas L. Cooper
Price: US$45.00
Sacred Painting in Bali is a vibrant form of
folk art. Unlike Balinese commercial art, sacred paintings, once they are
dedicated in a temple are believed to possess spiritual power. They are not
preserved as 'works of art', but are regarded as craft products made for a
specific purpose and expected to wear out in time. Sacred Paintings are
'traditional' paintings in Bali and are derived from traditional narrative,
legends, fables and the Hindu epics of Mahabhrata and Ramayana. They convey
a vision of niskala, the unseen world and are functionally religious. Sacred
Painting is well researched and contains ninety-six full coloured pictures
of painters and their works taken by the author himself. |

THEO MEIER : A SWISS ARTIST UNDER THE TROPICS
by Didier Hamel
US$130 (Hard Cover) and US$110 (Soft
Cover)
Theo Meier was born in Bubendorf/Basel-Champagne
in 1908 and from a very early age had made up his mind that he wanted to be
an artist. He enrolled at the Basel School for Arts and Craft and worked his
way through a scholarship and short studies in Berlin and Dresden. He
dreamed of going "East" to the "Tropics" like Gauguin and others before him.
He set off to find his inspiration in the south seas and arrived in Papeete,
Tahiti, then on to Bora-Bora. After a short tour of the New Hebrides, New
Caledonia and Australia he went on to Hong Kong, China and Singapore and
then finally to Bali where he stayed for 20 years. He loved painting the
Balinese women and the picturesque landscapes surrounding him. He went on to
settle in Thailand where he also spent 25 years painting. Theo Meier died in
Basel in 1982 and his ashes were scattered over the two inspirational places
that so dominated his life, Bali and Thailand. This book is both
enlightening and entertaining. It so aptly describes the fascination for the
east of that time, interspersed with political, cultural and social events
that shaped this artist's life. |

- Traditional Balinese Music

to listen to
a sample of Balinese gamelan music
Balinese Music is one of the most seductive kinds of music in the modern
world. The traditional Balinese Orchestra is called a Gamelan Orchestra and
it is comprised of various forms of percussion. There is a large range of
gongs, metallophones and xylophones and they are played in a lively and
engaging fashion. The music itself is complex and very vibrant.
Many western composers have been so captivated by the music of Bali that
have spent many years documenting, recording and immersing themselves in it.
One of the best-known of these composers is Colin McPhee (1900 - 1964) who
went to Bali in the 1920s and 1930s where he spent many long years
contributing to Balinese Music by funding orchestras and special
performances.
Gamelan music almost always accompanies all the ritual festivals in Bali.
There are different types of music for every occasion and some samples of
these are listed below;

The Barong Dance
The Barong Dance is perhaps the most well-known of all
Balinese Dances. It tells the story of the fight between good and evil.
Rangda is the powerful Black Magic demoness challenging the authority of the
King Erlangga - this is the fight between good and evil. This conflict sees
Rangda cast her spell over the soldiers and they are overcome by madness and
the desire to stab themselves with their own weapons - keris. (the Keris
Dance) During the final conflict the king is represented as a powerful
Barong (a mystical lion like creature) who finally overpowers the spell of
Rangda. |
 |
The Kecak Dance
The unnerving sounds and rhythms of the sound of chak, chak,
chak electrify the stage of the Kecak Dance. This dance has a vocal
orchestra of around 150 men and was conceived by the German painter Walter
Spies and the dancers of Bedulu Village in the 1930s. Today it is one of the
most watched dance performances in Bali. There are excerpts from the
Ramayana story when the demon King Rawana leaps into the centre of the
circle and the men respond by simulating his flight with long hissing
sounds. When Hanuman enters the mystic circle, the men become an army of
chattering monkeys - hence the nickname of "Monkey Dance". |
 |
The Legong Dance
Of all the classical balinese dances, the Legong is the most
beautiful. It is performed by young women wearing exquisite brocaded
costumes and crowns of frangipani blossoms. The movements are highly
stylized and structured and were first perfomred nearly 200 years ago. The
name Legong derives from leg meaning "elegant movement" and gong for the
music. The girls perform the dance in unison, tightly bound in their
costumes and their headresses quivering with each dance movement. It is one
of the most famous of all Balinese Dances. |
 |
Gamelan Jegog
Jegog is the name give to the huge bamboo xylophones that
make up the orchestra of Jegog. This gamelan orchestra is traditionally
found in the west of Bali in the province of Jembrana. Each ensemble is made
up of six groups of bamboo xylophones and each xylophone has eight bamboo
tubes. The sound of this ensemble resembles the sound of roaring thunder.
The Jegog accompnies Kebyar dances and also the Bull Races in west bali. |

The Gamelan Rindik is made up of four pairs of bamboo
xylophones, cymbals, flutes and one drum. This orchestra is used to
accompany the social dances of Joged - a popular dance in the tourist venues
of Bali. The Joged dancer goes into the audience and taps a man on the
shoulder who is then obliged to dance with her in the Balinese style. It is
always funny and a little sassy too. The music of the Gamelan Rindik is
up-beat and very lively. |

Suling (Flute)
This gamelan group is made up of 25 to 30 suling players and
is the orchestra that mostly accompanies the Kebyar performances. Sulings
also accompany each Balinese Orchestra, and can be heard drifting in and out
through the sharper sounds of the metallaphones. Sulings are made from
bamboo and the players utilize circular breathing. |
